Lines companies, electricity retailers, community organisations and the government have partnered to launch EnergyMate, a free in-home coaching service helping families at highest risk of energy hardship reduce electricity costs and live in a warmer home.

Launched in Porirua at the end of April,  the pilot programme was made possible by region-specific funding from Vector in South Auckland, Unison in Rotorua, and Wellington Electricity in Porirua plus funding from retailers and a contribution from EECA.

     

Vector's CEO Simon Mackenzie said it was great to be part of the EnergyMate programme. "It comes at a time that's really important for the whole energy sector."
   

It recognises "the challenges of affordability of energy right across the country," he said.
     

Unison relationship manager Danny Gough said the pilot will help vulnerable families to heat their homes in the most cost-effective way possible. Unison's involvement in the pilot as a great way to make their homes warmer and healthier.


EnergyMate coaches will work with people in hardship to help cut bills and increase warmth by

  • getting on the best electricity plan for them,
  • heating their home in the cheapest way possible,
  • using simple tips to make their home more energy-efficient, and
  • connecting them with other services such as insulation or budgeting support.

     

EnergyMate will initially be trialled across 150 families in South Auckland, Rotorua and Porirua. It is being delivered by community-based financial mentors.
     

The EnergyMate pilot was made possible by region-specific funding from Vector in South Auckland, Unison in Rotorua, and Wellington Electricity in Porirua plus funding from retailers Genesis Energy, Nova, Meridian, Mercury, TrustPower, Contact, and Prime Energy, together with a contribution from EECA.
